If you are planning to travel abroad, here is some helpful information in relation to roaming.

How do I set up roaming?

From April 26th 2013, new Billpay customers (excluding Mobile Broadband) will be set up to roam automatically within 5 days of joining the network. You will receive a text message from eMobile to let you know that this service has beenapplied to your account.

If you became a Billpay customer before this date, please call a member of our Customer Care team on 1800 690 000 before you travel to ensure that you are set up to use your phone when abroad. All sums due under your contract must be paid by the due date before roaming can be switched on.

While you are abroad

As soon as you arrive at your destination your mobile will automatically look for networks to use based on how strong the other operator's signals are. Once your phone has connected to a network, you will receive a text with the details of the local roaming charges for calls, texts and data.
Please note that other operator charges may vary. Click on the bill pay or prepay tab above and select the country you are travelling to for other operator charges

Using data while abroad
If you want to use data while abroad, check your settings to ensure data roaming is switched on. Before you travel view our list of network partners at your destination to ensure you select a network with working data.

When you use data for the first time while abroad, you will receive a text with a link to www.roamingalerts.com - it will ask you if you are happy to accept charges before you are able to use data.

Controlling data costs
If you have data as part of your plan or have a data add-on, please note that these will not apply while you are abroad. All data use while you are away will be charged separately per KB or you can a buy a European or USA roaming data add-on.

Using data abroad can be expensive, so we've devised some tips to help you control your data costs:

  • WiFi: Try to use WiFi as much as possible to avoid unnecessary data roaming charges. If you are using WiFi only, make sure to deselect the data roaming option in your settings
  • If you are not using WiFi, be aware that activity such as browsing YouTube, photos, streaming music or downloading mail attachments uses a lot of data and will incur high costs.
  • Applications: If you are using a smartphone, a lot of applications use data running in the background, e.g. email, weather updates, software updates etc. Check your application settings to make sure there are no automatic updates turned on.
  • Google Maps: If you are using Google Maps for navigation, please note that 30 seconds of navigation by car uses on average 20-30MB of data. You can cache regions where you plan to travel. Visit Google Maps help for more details.
  • Data Roaming add-ons: If you are travelling to Europe or the USA, we have great value data roaming add-ons. For more information click here
